Action 21 was established in 1996 to promote sustainable living to people in Warwick District and across Warwickshire. Sustainability means working towards a balanced society where our needs are met, within the limits of what the earth can provide. Action 21 aims to achieve positive action for people and the environment at a local level, working in constructive partnership with councils, businesses, voluntary groups and especially local people. Action 21 became a not-for-profit company in 2001 and receives funding from statutory organisations, charitable trusts, donations and membership fees.

Action 21 is supported by approximately 60 volunteers who are involved in running varied community projects. These highlight the links between helping the environment and creating a good quality of life. Action 21’s volunteer groups focus on the areas of food, energy, transport and waste.

Examples of our work

Action 21 volunteers at the peace festival
  • Practical Recycling - Action 21 volunteers provide a full litter picking, sorting and recycling service at the annual Leamington Peace Festival.
  • Environmental Education - Each year Action 21 organises a large environmental education event for 1500 primary children from across Warwickshire in partnership with local councils.
  • Recycle Warehouse – This shop at the recycling centre in Leamington Spa is open from January 18th 2006. The shop’s core business is selling quality second hand items which would otherwise have gone to landfill sites. It will be a green showcase with information and displays about environmental issues, and income will be ploughed back into projects to help people and the planet.
  • Local Food – Action 21’s Allotments Link Project encourages people to grow their own food, providing training in gardening and support for allotment holders. We run events to encourage people to enjoy food cooked with healthy fresh ingredients.
